Reading - Unit 1 - "Courage"

Next week's task in reading will be to close read the fiction piece titled, Happy Birthday Dr. King. Students will work in small groups to answer text-dependent questions and to use context clues to find meanings of unknown words. They will also be creating a digital notebook of vocabulary words for the story.

Mrs. Spakausky's Math Class

The students will investigate factors and factor pairs for numbers between 1 and 100. They will multiply using the commutative property.They will determine whether a whole number between 1-100 is a prime or composite number.  The students will also review the strategies they used to solve basic multiplication facts.

Social Studies  - Chapter 4-"Land and Water in the Northeast"

We will continue our study of the Northeast.  This week we will finish talking about Chesapeake Bay and begin talking about the first people to settle in this area: the Narragansett.

There will be a Chapter 4 (lesson 1, 2, 3) and Chapter 5 (lesson 1 only) TEST by the end of this week or beginning of next.

In order to gain some background knowledge of Dr. Martin Luther King,  students will work in small groups to close read a biographical article about his life. They will also independently watch a video about him and answer text-dependent questions related to the video.

Reading - Close Reading- "Casey at the Bat"
Take Me Out to the Ballgame...!!! Close reading is the careful, sustained interpretation of a piece of text, and one of the cornerstones of the Common Core State Standards. We will review this skill with an activity in which students will close read Oreo cookies...as you can imagine this activity has been quite popular in the past! Then, we will begin a close read of the poem, "Casey at the Bat". Students will read and reread this piece of rich text, dissecting it to gain an understanding of the author's words. They will also compare it to another text and attempt to understand the author's perspective.



Social Studies  - Chapter 4-"Land and Water in the Northeast"

Fourth grade Social Studies is the study of regions of the United States. This week, students will become familiar with our Social Studies text by working with partners on a "textbook scavenger hunt".   Then we will begin with chapter 4.  There will  be a quiz of the Northeast States on Friday. The students will be given a blank map and will need to  label the states and water areas. I will be sending home a study guide and practice one on Monday.

Module 4-Measurement Experiences (linear measurement, mass/weight, volume and capacity)

There will be a nightly homework assignment.
