January 30-February 3

NOTE--

Confusion regarding the school calendar---
Friday, February 17, was originally scheduled as a Teacher Institute-- that is not the case any longer.  We will be in school that day.
Teachers' Institute on Tuesday, March 20.
Also, Friday, May 18, (not Thursday, May 17th) is another Early Dismissal/SIP Day

We are going to Argonne National Labs for a field trip on Wed. Feb. 15th from 9:00-1:00.

Book 1 - Newberry Award Winner and summary sheet
Book 2-Mystery -at least 100 pages and mystery poster colored and filled out
Book 3-Biography-at least 100 pages-character wheel sheet filled out


Kane County Cougars-Ozzie's Reading Club-Optional
The first base to this optional reading program is due Monday, January 30th!
Don't forget a parent signature!


Six Flags Reading Program sheets-Optional
The sheets are to be signed and are due Feb. 1st!


Important Dates:


January 30th-Ozzie's Reading Club-Cougars-first base due with parent sign. (optional)
February 1st-Six Flags' Read to Succeed forms due (optional)

*possessive pronouns
*contractions with pronouns
*double subjects
*using we and us with nouns
*homophones

The unit 6 English Test is on Friday, Feb. 3rd!!

Chapter 15 -ENERGY!
In this chapter we will learn about:
*Lesson 1-Kinetic and Potential Energy
*Lesson 2-Forms of Energy
*Lesson 3-How heat is transferred
*Lesson 4-People using energy resources



Social Studies:
Chapter 8 is next in SS.



Reading:  
We will begin a new reading strategy next week.  We will work on determining what the cause and effect is, as we read a variety of material.  We will begin the week by reading a story called, Katie's Trunk.  We will focus on vocabulary at the beginning of the week and then move to the story.

 Deputy Seward from the Du Page County Sheriff's Department is coming to our class on Fridays to discuss various topics of drug prevention.  

The students got homework today.  This is optional and can be done at home, but doesn't need to be brought back to school.  Please discuss with them!

Math:
We will begin Geometry next week.
We will study lines, angles, points on Wednesday!

*Lesson 3-The French and Indian War-the British, French and Native Americans (fighting for control of a large part of North America)

The TEST for Chapter 7 will be on Friday, January 20th!

This week the fifth grade "Too Good For Drugs" program will begin. Deputy Seward from the Du Page County Sheriff's Department will be coming to our class on Fridays to discuss various topics of drug prevention.  A letter explaining more about the program will be sent home on Friday.

Math:
We have started chapter 24 on AREA
In this short chapter we will:
*find areas of squares and rectangles
*find the area of triangles
*find the area of a parallelogram
*find volume of rectangular prisms
THE CHAPTER 24 TEST IS SCHEDULED FOR WED. JANUARY 11TH!

Living Past Assembly-
The students enjoyed an assembly, today, on Martin Luther King, Jr.  The actor brought his life alive with slides, music, acting and more!  Ask your child what they thought!!!  Enjoy some of the pictures!
