This week's list includes words with the Greek Roots micro, mega, hydro, astro, hydra and path. Students will study the meaning of these roots and words that contain them. The final TEST for this lesson will be on Friday, 1/25.



ELA / Reading - Narrative Writing / Unit 1 Posttests
We have completed Unit 1 (Courage) in Reading, so it is time to take the unit posttest. On Wednesday, students will take the informational text portion of the unit posttest, and on Thursday, they will take the literary text portion. These tests are simply a data gathering tool for teachers in order to measure student growth. They will not be entered in the grade book.

We will also start Unit 2 in Reading, which is called Journeys.  We will begin with a story called, Grandfather's Journey!

Social Studies - The Midwest
Our study of the Midwest has begun with students creating their regional maps and taking a look at how the Great Lakes were formed. A QUIZ on the Midwest map is scheduled for Tuesday, 1/22.

ELA / Reading - Unit 1 - Courage
Students have been working on their "Profiles in Courage" Project for a week.  We will have Monday and Tuesday to finish things up and make notecards for the presentation.  Students will present their projects on  Wed., 1/16 and Thurs., 1/17. Please have your child share and practice what they have done so far.  Make sure they are referring to the example on CLASSROOM, with questions, and to the rubric to see how they will be assessed.

Social Studies - The Midwest
We will be studying the Midwest next.  The students will first learn the states of the Midwest and have a quiz on the states and bodies of water, Tuesday, 1/22.

Science - Energy Conversions
Investigating energy sources is our topic for the week. Students will complete a simulation that looks at types of energy sources and how they are used.

Mrs. Spakausky's Math Class -Unit Four Addition and Subtraction. 
The students will continue to focus on addition strategies and then move on to subtraction.  We will also focus on problem-solving strategies.

This week's list will consist of words that contain the soft "g" sound like fragile and giant.  The final TEST for this lesson will be on Friday, 1/11


Reading - Unit 1 - "Courage" - Profiles in Courage Culminating Project
Students will begin the research and the slideshow for the Profile in Courage project. They will be given time in class to work, however, they should expect to also work on it at home. The tentative due date for the slideshow is Thursday, 1/17. Presentations will begin that day.

The mythology projects were a huge success! It was a joy to watch students work together to create their presentations. I was amazed by their creativity and enthusiasm, and proud of their effort and collaboration.  


Social Studies -The Midwest
We will work on our United States map this week.  Then we will begin learning the states of the midwest.

Science - Energy Conversions
Our focus in Science this week will be on how to support a claim with evidence. We will look at how to gather evidence through a simulation activity and with a reference book. Then, we will work to write a design argument to help Ergstown solve its blackout problem.

Math-Unit 4-Addition and Subtraction-
We will begin Unit Four Addition and Subtraction.  The students will complete activities designed to help them understand some of the relationships between hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, and millions.  We will also complete  a problem string that focuses on the give and take (compensation) strategy for adding multi-digit numbers.
