October 26-30, 2015

 Students enjoyed some station work this week!






This week:
Friday, October 30-Halloween Parties and Parade
Week of November 2nd-Conferences



Math:  
Unit 1 is coming to an end this week.
We have covered:
Multiplication and Volume
Factors, Multiples and the Associative Property
Multiplication Strategies 
Multiplication to Division (reviewing division with area models, division with remainders, etc)


The students can study any papers from their math pocket, they can bring home their Home Connection workbook and Student Book to review anything from Unit 1.
The students will also have a review packet that will be sent home later this week.  Please have them finish it for homework and we will review it before the test.

The test is Monday, October 26th!

For 3 bonus point, parent should sign and return the sheet attached to their study packet.



ELA---

English/Words skills: Theme
We will be learning about theme and discussing themes in the stories we read.
What is theme?
The theme in a story is its underlying message, or 'big idea.' In other words, what critical belief about life is the author trying to convey in the writing of a novel, play, short story or poem?  It is usually universal in nature. Often, a piece of writing will have more than one theme.

Reading:
We will be finishing up A Boy Called Slow and we will move on to reading excerpts from a novel called, Touching Spirit Bear.


Word Work:Unit 3

Writing: Challenge
We will be writing about challenges that we have had in life.  We will be practicing some of our English skills as we write.  These include:
Commas
Interjections
Conjunctions
Prepositions


Social Studies: Chapter 5-"The Struggle to Found Colonies"
Lesson 1-1607-Jamestown-The First permanent English colony is started in North America
Lesson 2-1609-Hudson River-Henry Hudson explores for the Dutch
Lesson 3-1620-Plymouth-The Pilgrims arrive on the Mayflower.
Lesson 4-1682-Philadelphia-Pennsylvania colony is founded.


Science: Chapter 5-Energy and Ecosystems
Chapter 5-Energy and Ecosystems
Lesson 1-How do plants produce food?
Lesson 2-How is energy passed through an ecosystem?


We are currently working on writing photosynthesis songs.  Ask your child to share them with you.  We will be performing our songs in class on Monday.


The students may bring home their science or social studies book at any time to preview or review.

The students brought home their portfolios this weekend.  Browse through and see the new work they put in, sign and return the portfolios by Monday.

Writing: Hallow-Weiner
We have read a story called, Hallo-Weiner.  Have your student tell you about it.  We will be making our Halloween "dogs" next week.  What costume will your child pick for his/her dog? 
The dogs will become a character in our point of view story.  The story directions are on CLASSROOM and they are due on WEDNESDAY, October 21st!
Be creative!
