January 9-13

Happy 2012!!!

HELP-
ARE you busy this Saturday?
We need volunteers for this Saturday, Jan. 7th to help with Market Day.  Volunteers can just show up at Lakeview at 8AM to help out.

I need volunteers to supply the following:
*aluminum foil
*3x3 post-it notes (any color)
*Expo markers

Field Trip-
We are going to Argonne National Labs for a field trip on Wed. Feb. 15th from 9:00-1:00.  I will need two chaperons.  I will take your name and put it in my "hat" and let you know by next week.

Reading Program-
Book 1 - Newberry Award Winner and summary sheet
Book 2-Mystery -at least 100 pages and mystery poster colored and filled out
Book 3-Biography-at least 100 pages-character wheel sheet filled out

Important Dates:
January 9-MAPS testing for reading 8:05-9:05AM
January 12-MAPS testing for math 10:30-11:30AM
February 1st-Flags' Read to Succeed forms due
February 15th-Field Trip to Argonne
February 27th-Reading Program sheets for 2nd trimester are due!!!


Next week in fifth grade we will:

 TGFD's Begins!
This week the fifth grade "Too Good For Drugs" program will begin. Deputy Seward from the Du Page County Sheriff's Department will be coming to our class on Fridays to discuss various topics of drug prevention.  A letter explaining more about the program will be sent home on Friday.

Math:
We have started chapter 24 on AREA
In this short chapter we will:
*find areas of squares and rectangles
*find the area of triangles
*find the area of a parallelogram
*find volume of rectangular prisms
THE CHAPTER 24 TEST IS SCHEDULED FOR WED. JANUARY 11TH!


Spelling:
L 16-Pretest will be Monday!
Work due on Thursday!
Test on Friday! 

English
We will be moving on to the unit on pronouns.  In this unit we will cover:
*subject pronouns
*object pronouns
*using I and me
*possessive pronouns
*contractions with pronouns
*double subjects
*using we and us with nouns
*homophones


 
Science:
We will start chapter 15 on ENERGY!
In this chapter we will learn about:
*Lesson 1-Kinetic and Potential Energy
*Lesson 2-Forms of Energy
*Lesson 3-How heat is transferred
*Lesson 4-People using energy resources



Social Studies:
Chapter 7 is next in SS.
In this chapter we will learn about:
*Lesson 1-New Spain in the 1500 and 1600's-expanding and establishing colonies in Florida and New Mexico
*Lesson 2-French Exploration of the Mississippi River and new French colonies
*Lesson 3-The French and Indian War-the British, French and Native Americans (fighting for control of a large part of North America)



Reading:  
We will continue to learn about main idea and details.  Ask your child to give you a summary about the main story we read this week about the Golden Lion Tamarin.



Living Past Assembly-
The students enjoyed an assembly, today, on Martin Luther King, Jr.  The actor brought his life alive with slides, music, acting and more!  Ask your child what they thought!!!  Enjoy some of the pictures!
