Words: Lesson 1: Wordly Wise...continued
We will flip flop with spelling units and word work units.  
We will work on it together next week.

We will also be doing lessons on root words.
The students should know the following roots and prefixes for our quiz next week:
aqua-water
man-hand
bio-life
phon-sound
uni-one


Reading: Close Reading
We will continue to do some practice with close reading.  The students learned about text marking and reading deeper to help with understanding of complex texts. We have close read songs and poems.  Ask your child what Langston Hughes's poem, "Mother to Son" is about.  


Writing: Figurative Language
We've covered:
onomatopoeia
alliteration
hyperbole
similes
metaphors
Can your child give you examples of each type figurative language?


Social Studies: Chapter 4-"Spain Builds an Empire"
We will begin with chapter 4 this year.
Lesson 1-The Voyages of Columbus and what it led to
Lesson 2-Different Worlds Collide-Spanish conquistadors establish new colonies in North America and South America
Lesson 3-Life in New Spain-Spain gaining wealth from the settlement in North America


Science: Science Inquiry

In science we will start with the first section about "Getting Ready for Science."
What is the Scientific Method?  We will continue to discuss the scientific method next week.


Math:  Volume and number patterns were the focus of this week.  We will continue to work on finding patterns in multiplication equations.
